What Is AnZa Coffee

Our Story

At AnZa Coffee, we believe an espresso machine should be more than just a tool—it should be an experience. It should bring joy, not just with every cup of coffee, but in the way it feels and looks on your countertop.

It all started in Berkeley, California, in a design studio next to an espresso machine repair shop. Surrounded by coffee culture, we noticed a problem: most espresso machines were… well, visually, bland—all made of the same stainless steel. We knew there had to be another way.

We set out to create a machine that felt different—a machine with a simple aesthetic and a soul of expressive materials. One that combines innovative design with a tactile experience, bringing a sense of connection to your coffee ritual. And in 2017, after countless sketches and prototypes, we launched our first machine on Kickstarter, and it took off. People got it. They loved it.

Since then, we’ve grown, moved to Stavanger, Norway, and refined every detail to improve our machines. And now, we’re ready for the next chapter.

Our Products

At AnZa Coffee, we’re all about bringing unconventional materials to create an exceptional espresso experience. With our unique blend of design and function, each product is carefully crafted to elevate your brewing game. Here’s a quick overview of our key products:

It’s not just a machine; it’s a statement piece. The AnZa White machine, with its clean, minimalist design, combines both form and function, giving you a timeless piece that fits effortlessly into any modern space.

2. Design That Meets Function

As designers and coffee enthusiasts, we understand that an espresso machine isn’t just about brewing coffee; it’s about the joy of using it. That’s why we’ve put as much thought into the design of our machines as we have into the technical specs. The reduced form, ergonomic features, and luxurious tactile experience are all part of creating an espresso machine that’s as enjoyable to use as it is to look at.

3. Customer Care That’s as Strong as Your Espresso

Machine Troubleshooting & Repairs

I Am Having Issues With My Pressure Gauge

Experiencing trouble with your pressure gauge can be frustrating, but don’t worry—we’re here to help you troubleshoot!

Understanding the Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge on your AnZa espresso machine only measures the pressure in the group head when you pull a shot. This pressure is generated as the pump pushes water through the boiler and into the portafilter. For the gauge to register pressure correctly, the ground coffee needs to be tamped into a tight “puck.” Proper tamping not only shapes the puck but also allows it to resist the flow of water, creating that crucial pressure. When you tamp the coffee grounds, they compress, and as they get wet, they swell, helping to seal the puck even further.

What Are the Common Reasons for Pressure Gauge Issues?

If your pressure gauge isn’t registering any pressure, it is due to several factors that you can easily fix yourself.

  • Incorrect grind: If your coffee is ground too coarsely, it won’t create enough resistance. Aim for a fine grind for optimal results.
  • Insufficient amount of ground coffee: Make sure you’re using enough ground coffee in the portafilter—about 18 grams is ideal.
  • Insufficient tamping pressure: You should be applying around 15 kilograms of pressure when tamping with a decent tamper to create a firm puck.
How do I do a pressure test?

This test will help us determine whether the issue is with the coffee preparation or if it’s a machine-related concern:

  1. Insert the black rubber disk that came with your machine (the one used for backflushing) into the portafilter.
  2. Pull 3-5 shots without any coffee in the portafilter. This disk will block the water from passing through, allowing your machine to build maximum pressure.
  3. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge for each shot and include that information in your support inquiry.

We’re here to help you get back to crafting your perfect cup of espresso in no time!

How long does AnZa take to warm up?

To make the perfect cup of coffee, it all starts with the right temperature—and knowing how long to let your AnZa Coffee machine heat up can make a big difference in your brew.

Espresso Heat-Up Time:

The AnZa machine takes about four minutes to reach the ideal temperature for brewing espresso. This ensures a consistent and precise extraction for that perfect shot. While four minutes is enough to pull a shot, we recommend waiting a bit longer for optimal results. Remember to leave the empty portafilter in the machine so it heats up too!

Steaming Milk:

If you’re planning to steam milk for lattes, cappuccinos, or other milk-based drinks, the R1 machine takes around 90 seconds to reach the steaming temperature. To activate steam mode, push the middle rocker switch to the right. Did you notice the status light pulsing? The machine is heating up! When optimal steam temperature is reached, you'll hear a short humming sound every 5 seconds and the status light will light continuously, indicating that the machine is ready to create silky smooth microfoam for your favorite drinks.

Meanwhile, an R2 machine produces steam as soon as you switch the middle rocker switch to the right—just open the steam valve to get steaming

Steam Mode Pulsing Noise:

When your machine is at steam temperature, it’ll make a short humming noise every 5 seconds. This is the pump running to maintain pressure in the boiler and is completely normal.

Full Heat-Up Time:

For the best overall performance, we suggest allowing the machine to warm up for 10 minutes. This gives the machine and portafilter enough time to fully heat up, ensuring that both the espresso extraction and milk steaming are at their best. A pre-heated portafilter is particularly important to maintain the right temperature during extraction, resulting in a richer, more flavorful shot.

My machine does not switch on?

It looks like your AnZa Coffee machine is on a little break, but don’t worry—we have some tricks up our sleeves to help get it back in action.

If your machine isn’t switching on, it may indicate an electrical fault. Here are a few quick checks to consider:

Check the Power Source

First things first—make sure your machine is plugged in securely. Sometimes a loose connection can be the culprit. You might also want to test the outlet by plugging in another device to see if it’s working properly.

Examine the Power Button

Next, give the power button a quick firm press. Ensure it’s not stuck or jammed, as this can prevent the machine from turning on. When you release the power button it should illuminate with a constant light. If the light is flashing there may be a problem, please get in touch with us at contact@anzacoffee.com

If you’ve gone through these steps and your machine is still not turning on, please drop us a message at contact@anzacoffee.com, and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

My AnZa Coffee Machine Has Water in the Tray

If you've noticed water collecting in the tray of your AnZa Coffee, you might be wondering if something’s wrong. The short answer is: it's completely normal and here’s why this happens:

AnZa Coffee machines are equipped with a pressure valve that manages the internal pressure of the system. When the machine is in use, this valve releases small amounts of water into the tray. This occurs for a couple of reasons:

  1. Depressurizing the System: The valve helps depressurize the system as the machine switches between different modes—such as from brewing espresso to steaming milk—or when the machine starts.
  2. Water Purging: At startup, the valve also purges a small amount of water from the system to keep everything functioning smoothly.

If you’ve seen small outlets that look like nuts, they’re actually the outlets from the valve, with hoses attached, directing excess water into the tray.

So, while it might seem like there’s more water than usual, this is just the machine doing its job. If after reading this, you’re still feeling uncertain, let’s talk about it at contact@anzacoffee.com

My AnZa needs some repairs

AnZa Coffee Maintenance & Care

Maintenance essentials

A little regular care goes a long way in making sure your AnZa Coffee machine lasts for years to come and performs beautifully. Here are some essential products you’ll want to have on hand:

Back Flushing with Cafiza

Cleaning the inside of your machine is just as important as keeping the outside shiny. Regular back flushing helps eliminate coffee oils and residue that can build up over time. For this, we recommend using Cafiza, which is easy to use and ensures your machine stays clean and functioning smoothly. Your AnZa Coffee will thank you!

Descaling

If you’ve noticed your machine isn’t performing like it used to, it might be time for a little descaling. Minerals from your water can build up inside and affect how your machine works. Dezcal is a fantastic descaling solution that’s both effective and safe for your AnZa Coffee. A quick descale will keep your espresso flowing smoothly!

Incorporating these essentials into your AnZa Coffee care routine will help keep your AnZa espresso machine happy and brewing beautifully for years. Cheers to great coffee and effortless maintenance!

AnZa White Brass polishing

The deal with raw brass is a living material in constant transformation. It develops a unique patina through a natural oxidation process, and the beauty lies in the choice to polish it off or let it evolve naturally.

Want to keep your machine looking sleek and shiny? Say hello to AnZa White Polishing! This specially formulated polish will help keep your machine looking sleek and shiny. Regular polishing not only enhances the appearance of your espresso maker but also protects the surface from wear and tear.

The brass tray and top plate will oxidize in contact with water /humidity. Use a brass polish (we recommend Brasso Wadding) to remove the oxidization and at the same time add a layer of protective polish to the metal. To minimise oxidization, wipe the tray and top plate dry after use

How to clean water tank?

Keeping your AnZa Coffee machine in top shape means giving a little extra love to its water tank. While it’s designed for durability, we strongly recommend against removing it, as it’s delicate and could break. Instead, follow these simple instructions to clean your water tank with care.

Before starting the cleaning process, make sure to empty the tank. The easiest way to drain the tank is to run the remaining water through your espresso machine and soak it up with a clean cloth. You can very carefully tip the tank to pour out any leftover water. Just be gentle—it’s delicate!

Once the tank is empty, it’s time to give it a good wipe down. Grab a soft, damp cloth and gently wipe the inside of the tank. This will help remove any mineral deposits or residue that may have built up. Please, avoid using any detergent or harsh chemicals during the cleaning—these can damage the tank and affect the quality of your coffee. There is a mesh filter at the bottom of the tank, you can use a simple soft pick or even a finger nail to lift the white retaining ring and then remove the mesh filter. Clean the filter and retaining ring and replace them in the tank by pressing the ring into place with a finger

We’ve kept these instructions straightforward, but if you’re feeling a bit stuck or need a friendly hand with your AnZa Coffee machine, don’t hesitate to reach out at contact@anzacoffee.com. We’ve got your back!

How to backflush AnZa?

One of the most effective ways to maintain your AnZa Coffee machine is through backflushing, which helps remove coffee oils and residue from the group head and internal components. Let’s walk through the backflushing process to keep your machine brewing those delicious shots you love!

What You’ll Need

Espresso machine cleaning powder (like Cafiza)

Blind (blank) filter basket or black rubber disk (included with your machine)

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide to Backflush Your AnZa Coffee

1. Set Up

Start by inserting the black rubber disk (nipple pointing upwards) into the portafilter. Next, add about 1/2 teaspoon of espresso machine cleaner / one tablet to the basket. This will help tackle any buildup in your machine. If you have a “blank” portafilter basket, lever the normal basket out of the portafilter and snap the blank basket in place instead. Blank baskets make this process a little easier—check our Accessories and Add-ons section for some recommendations.

2. Run Backflush Cycles

Now, it’s time to get backflushing! Lock the portafilter into the group head—just like you would when pulling a shot. Turn the machine on and allow it to get up to espresso temperature. Start the brew cycle by pushing the front rocker switch to the right, as if you were pulling a shot, and let it run for about 10-15 seconds before stopping it. You’ll hear the pump run and see the pressure gauge read maximum pressure.

The pressure created during this cycle forces the water and cleaner back through the system, dislodging any buildup hiding inside. You can let the cleaning solution sit in the machine for a few minutes between cycles to let it work its magic. Repeat this process 5 times.

3. Rinse

After your backflush cycles are complete, remove the portafilter and rinse it thoroughly. Then, run 5 more backflush cycles using just water (no cleaner) to rinse out any remaining detergent. This step ensures your machine is free of any cleaning product residue. If you were using a “blank” portafilter basket, you can replace it with the regular basket now.

4. Final Clean

Once you’ve rinsed everything, remove the portafilter and clean around the group head with a brush. Wipe down the group head, portafilter, and the surface of your machine to remove any leftover residue.

Pro Tip: For optimal performance, aim to backflush your espresso machine bi-weekly or after about every 25 shots. This regular maintenance will keep your AnZa Coffee running smoothly.

By following these steps, you’ll be ready for your next espresso cup; but now—tasting more fresh, flavorful, and free from unwanted flavors!

How to descale AnZa?

Keeping your AnZa espresso machine in top shape means regular descaling to remove mineral deposits that can build up in the boiler, pipes, and internal components. This is especially important if you use hard water, as those pesky deposits can really impact both performance and flavor.

Descaling should typically be done every 2-3 months and following these steps, you’ll have it done in no time:

What You’ll Need:

Descaling solution (we recommend Dezcal)

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide to Descale Your AnZa Coffee

1. Prepare the Descaling Solution

Follow the instructions on your descaling product to mix it with water. If your machine’s manual allows for it, you can also use a homemade solution.

2. Run the Solution Through the Machine

Fill your water reservoir with the prepared descaling solution.

3. Start the Brew Cycle

Run a brew cycle, allowing about 1/4 of the solution to pass through the group head. Don’t forget to run some solution through the steam wand as well! Afterward, turn off the machine and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. This soaking time helps the solution break down the scale.

4. Repeat the Process

Continue to run more solution through the machine until the tank is nearly empty. Pause every 1/4 of the tank to let the solution sit for another 10 minutes.

5. Flush the System

Once you’re done, empty the water tank and rinse it thoroughly. Fill it with fresh water and run multiple cycles through the group head and steam wand to flush out any leftover descaling solution. Repeat this until you no longer detect any smell or taste of the descaler (usually 3-5 cycles should do it).

To keep your AnZa Coffee running smoothly and reduce the need for frequent descaling, consider these water quality tips:

  • Use filtered water: if possible, use filtered or bottled water to reduce mineral content. This can help minimize scale buildup and improve the taste of your coffee.
  • Regularly check water hardness: if you're using tap water, consider testing its hardness. If it’s hard, a water softener can help reduce minerals before they reach your machine.

By incorporating these descaling tips and water quality tricks to your regular routine, you’ll ensure that your AnZa espresso machine keeps serving up fantastic espresso shots just the way they’re meant to be!

Cleaning the steam wand

Maintaining Your Steam Wand:

To ensure your steam wand continues to perform at its best, regular cleaning is a must. Simply wipe the steam wand with a slightly damp cloth and purge some steam after each use to remove milk residue and prevent buildup.

Steam Wand Tips:

For those who like to play around with different milk textures, the AnZa steam wand tip offers flexibility. The tip can be unscrewed for cleaning, or you can swap it out for one with more or fewer holes—allowing you to control the steam pressure for rich, thick foam for cappuccinos and smooth, silky froth for latte art. Check out this set of steam wand tips from Rocket Espresso to take your frothing game to the next level!

Accessories and Add-ons

What to look for in an espresso grinder

When it comes to brewing the perfect espresso, grinders often don’t get the recognition they deserve. A high-quality grinder is essential for unlocking the full flavor potential of your beans. In this guide, we’ll share some tips on how to choose the right grinder for your needs, along with our top picks for home espresso grinders.

5 Features to Consider for When Choosing Your Coffee Grinder

  • Grind Consistency: Look for a grinder that provides uniform particle size. Inconsistent grind can lead to uneven extraction, affecting the flavor of your coffee.
  • Grind Type: Burr grinders are preferred for espresso because they offer better consistency. They create a precise grind size that can be made coarser or finer while blend grinders pulverize coffee into irregular pieces that can lead to overly bitter flavors from ultra-fine particles and sour flavors from large coffee chunks.
  • Adjustability: A grinder with adjustable settings allows you to fine-tune the grind size for different brewing methods, from espresso to French press, allowing you to savor coffee in all its delightful forms.
  • Capacity: Consider how much coffee you typically brew. If you make multiple shots at once, a larger grinder might be beneficial.
  • Build Quality: A sturdy grinder will last longer and perform better, so it’s worth investing in a quality model.
Recommended espresso grinders

Grinders can sometimes be the unsung heroes of great espresso! Here are a few of our top picks for home espresso:

  • Baratza Sette 30: This grinder is a great value for the quality it delivers. While it may be a bit louder, it's perfect for getting those beans ready quickly and efficiently.
  • Eureka Specialità: With its sleek design, the Eureka Specialità is not only visually appealing but also operates quietly, making it a fantastic choice for those who appreciate both style and functionality.
  • Rocket Giannino: If you're ready to elevate your coffee game, the Rocket Giannino is a high-end grinder that promises exceptional performance and precision.
  • Varia: This grinder is super stylish and pairs beautifully with the AnZa White, adding an aesthetic touch to your coffee setup.
  • Baratza Sete 270Wi: A more expensive grinder with a built in scale, that grinds to your desired weight setting, not time.

We hope this guide helps you find the perfect grinder but if you find yourself still having a hard time picking “The One”, just drop us a message. We’ll do our best to help you choose a grinder for your AnZa Coffee.

Plugs

Your AnZa espresso machine will either be a 120V or 240V version (see the sticker on the base of the machine) and comes equipped with a detachable power cord with either a USA or EU plug, ensuring compatibility with outlets in those regions. But what if you need to use your AnZa Coffee in a different area?

If you find yourself in the UK, Australia or anywhere else with different plug requirements, you can easily switch out the enclosed power cord with a cord that has a compatible plug. For our UK customers, here’s a convenient option for a UK plug: Amazon.co.uk

Please note that using the correct plug not only guarantees a secure connection but also protects your machine from electrical issues. Always make sure to check the voltage of the machine (see the sticker on the base of the machine) and compatibility with your local outlets to ensure a seamless brewing experience.

If you need more information, feel free to reach out and we will do our best to assist you—even if that is a plug issue!

AnZa Coffee x Pepper Stone Ceramics Mugs

AnZa Coffee collaborated with Pepper Stone Ceramics based in Charlottesville, Virginia, to create earthy mugs with a modern feel. Each of these miraculous pieces is handmade by the talented ceramicist Anna, exclusively for AnZa Coffee. You can enjoy the cozy feeling of sipping your favorite drink, and with their generous surface area—practice your latte art. How wonderful is that?

At this time, these handmade mugs are only available in the United States. Pepper Stone Ceramics takes great care in crafting each mug, and to ensure they arrive safely and in perfect condition, we’ve decided to keep distribution local.

Portafilters

Every AnZa machine comes with a sleek, beautifully crafted portafilter. If you’ve got the White AnZa, you’ll be rocking a stylish wooden handle, perfect for that warm, minimalist vibe, while the Concrete AnZa comes with a show-stopping white ceramic handle accented with brass.

But here’s the kicker: these stunning portafilters aren’t just exclusive to AnZa machines. They’re also available for purchase separately! Designed to fit most Ø58mm group heads with “two ears” (those handy little bumps that lock the portafilter into place), they’re as versatile as they are gorgeous.

Your next perfect shot is just a portafilter away!

Alternative basket:

The portafilter basket is more than just a holder for your grounds—it directly impacts the flow and distribution of water, which is crucial for extracting rich, flavorful espresso.

The AnZa portafilter comes equipped with a high-quality basket designed to handle between 17 and 21 grams of ground coffee, ensuring a consistent extraction and great-tasting espresso.

If you're looking to elevate your espresso game, there are plenty of alternative baskets that also fit the AnZa portafilter. For those seeking competition grade precision, we recommend the IMS Precision Basket 12/18 gr - B70 2T H24.5 M, available from various online retailers. This upgrade provides improved flow and distribution, helping to bring out the best flavors from your coffee.

Why Upgrade?

An upgraded basket like the IMS Precision offers more consistent extractions, better crema, and an overall smoother espresso. If you like to tune your shots, it’s a great investment for your AnZa Coffee machine

Blank backflushing basket:

Use one of these instead of the black rubber backflushing disk. Available at Amazon and other outlets.

Grouphead Shower Screens

The shower screen on your AnZa coffee machine ensures even water distribution over the coffee grounds, leading to a more consistent extraction and better flavor.

The shower screen is simple to remove and clean. Just unscrew the center, clean off any residue, and replace it to keep your machine performing at its best.

For even more precise extraction, you can upgrade to the IMS CI 200IM shower screen. This high-quality replacement offers even better water distribution, perfect for those looking to experiment with their espresso process. Here is link to recommended IMS shower screen.

Our new glass water tank isn’t just stylish; it’s built to last. Easy to fill and clean, it makes your daily coffee routine a whole lot smoother.

Preinfusion – Bloom Your Coffee to Perfection!
Introducing preinfusion, a game-changing mode that adds a splash of water to your grounds, allowing them to "bloom" before pulling the shot. This small step makes a world of difference, enhancing flavour extraction and giving you real flowers in a cup, every time.

Adjustable Brew Pressure – Your Coffee, Your Way!
For the adventurous coffee lover, we’ve included adjustable brew pressure to make it more fun. Whether you’re sampling different beans or pushing your settings beyond the ordinary, this feature empowers you to brew a cup that’s uniquely created for your palate.

Sleek New Designs – Still AnZa, Still Cool!
We’ve updated the steam knob and portafilter handle, giving them a fresh look while keeping that unmistakable AnZa Coffee charm.

What does the R2 look like?

Get ready to meet the R2, a stunning evolution of our beloved original AnZa Concrete Espresso Machine! While it maintains the same size and shape you know and love, we’ve made some exciting updates that elevate both its aesthetics and functionality.

First up, the sleek new ceramic steam knob and portafilter handle. These updates not only enhance the machine’s look but also improve your grip and control while brewing. Plus, we’ve introduced a fresh take on our concrete casting technique, adding delightful texture that makes the R2 a true centerpiece.

It’s still AnZa, it’s still cool. And this time, even better!

When will the R2 be available to order?
